Parish of Somerton.

Notice is hereby given that a Vestry meeting will be held in and for this parish in the Vestry Room on Monday 25th day of March at 7 o’clock in the evening for the purpose of nominating Overseers and Guardians, also appointing Waywardens for the ensuing year.

And for electing three persons to serve on the Burial Board for the ensuing year and for auditing the accounts of the Burial Board.

Nomination of Overseers:

                The following persons were nominated to serve as overseers:

Edwin Bond & England Brown

George Barnard & Wm Cox

H W Ord & John Wyatt

F Gare & E Puddy

Wm Weech & G Cork

C Lafe {?} & G Frost.

The Vestry recommended that Messrs Bond and Brown be appointed to serve for the ensuing year as Overseers by the Magistrates.

Nomination of Guardians.

                Proposed by Mr Hewson and seconded by Mr Cork that Mr Wyatt be the Guardian for the ensuing year.

                Proposed by Mr Wm Nutt junior and seconded by Mr Wm Peddle that Mr H W Ord be also appointed to serve for the ensuing year.  Both propositions being passed unanimously.

Appointment of Waywardens.

                It was proposed by Mr James Nutt seconded by Mr Hewson that Mr Wyatt be re-elected, and on the proposition of Mr E W Valentine seconded by Mr John Peddle that Mr J Crocker be also re-elected, which was also carried unanimously.

Election of Burial Board.

                Proposed by Mr Valentine seconded by Mr Wyatt that the Rev W H Strong be re-elected.

Proposed by Mr Taylor seconded by Mr Hewson that Col Pinney be re-elected.

Proposed by Mr Bevan Clark and seconded by Mr Crocker that Mr H W Ord be also re-elected. The three propositions being unanimously passed.

The following now constitute the Burial Board: viz: Messrs A Braine, John Talbot, F S Crocker, G Cork, J Wyatt, James Nutt, H W Ord, Col Pinney, Rev W H Strong.

It was proposed by Mr James Nutt and seconded by Mr F Crocker that Mr Cork be elected a member of the Burial Board in place of Mr G Cossins who has left the parish.                             Carried.

Proposed by Mr Hewson seconded by Mr Valentine that Capt Pinney and Mr John Taylor should audit the accounts of the Burial Board.                    Carried.

The Vestry directed the Vestry clerk to write to Mr Bennett, Surveyor, calling his attention to the state of the paths in the cemetery and to request that he will at once cause them to be put in proper repair, according to his contract of May 1887

Mr James Nutt ad Mr Bevan Clark were appointed to audit the churchwardens’ accounts.

[18th April 1889] Parish of Somerton.

Notice is hereby given that a Vestry meeting will be held in and for this parish in the Vestry Room on Thursday the 18th April at 7 o’clock in the evening for the purpose of passing a resolution approving of the proposed alterations for the restoration of the Parish Church and authorising the Vicar and churchwardens to apply for a faculty to carry out the necessary works.

It was proposed by Mr Hewson and seconded by Mr James Nutt that the proposed alterations in the Parish Church and authorising the Vicar and churchwardens to apply for a faculty be granted which was carried unanimously. [original words!]

Parish of Somerton [25 April 1889]

Notice is hereby given that a Vestry meeting will be held in and for this parish in the Vestry Room on Thursday the 25th April at 7 o’clock in the evening for the purpose of examining the churchwardens’ accounts and appointing fit and proper persons to serve the office of churchwardens for the ensuing year, and for any other matter relative to the church restoration.

                Also to grant the Overseers a Poor Rate for the ensuing half year.

                And a Sanitary Rate to meet the demand of the Rural Sanitary Authority.

The churchwardens’ accounts were produced and on the proposition of Mr Wyatt seconded by Mr Taylor, were passed.

Proposed by Mr John Peddle and seconded by Mr Hewson that Mr E W Valentine be elected for the ensuing year, carried unanimously.

The vicar appointed Mr Wm Nutt junior as his warden.

Proposed by Mr Gare and seconded by Mr Wyatt that a Poor Rate of 1/1 in the £ be granted the Overseers - - carried.

Proposed by Mr Wm Nutt junior and seconded by Mr Hewson that a Sanitary Rate of 10d in the £ be also granted.                     Carried.

Parish of Somerton [16 May 1889]

Notice is hereby given that a Vestry meeting will be held in and for this parish in the Vestry room on Thursday the 16th day of May at 7 o’clock in the evening for the purpose of confirming a resolution passed at the Vestry on the 18th April 1889 authorising the Vicar and churchwardens to apply for a faculty to carry out the necessary alterations.

At a Vestry held at May 16th 1889 the Rev W H Strong in the chair, the plans, specifications and an estimate of the cost of the work connected with the restoration of the parish church Somerton, having been submitted to the Vestry –

                It was proposed by Mr Wm Hewson and seconded by Mr Wm Peddle that the resolution passed at the Vestry held on 18th April 1889 authorising the Vicar and churchwardens to apply for a faculty be confirmed.                            Carried unanimously.

Parish of Somerton [1 August 1889]

In pursuance of a notice received from the Inspectors for the Parish of Somerton duly appointed under the Act of 3 & 4 Wm 4 chap 90, we do hereby give notice that a meeting of the Ratepayers of the said parish will be held in the Vestry Room in the said Parish on Thursday the 1st August 1889 at 7 o’clock in the evening for the purpose of electing Inspectors for the execution of the said Act and for determining the amount of money to be raised for the purposes of the said Act for the current year.

                At a meeting held this day it was decided to adjourn the meeting until Thursday 8th August.

8th August 1889.

                At an adjourned meeting held this day it was proposed by Mr Head and seconded by Mr Crocker that a Gas Rate of 6d in the £ be granted to include making and collecting the same. The following persons were appointed Inspectors – Messrs Valentine, J Nutt and S Gunning, on the proposition of Mr Crocker seconded by Mr John Taylor.

November 1st 1889, Parish of Somerton.

At a meeting held this day pursuant to due notice of which the following is a copy:

Notice is hereby given that a Vestry meeting will be held in and for this parish in the Vestry Room on Friday 1st November at 7 o’clock in the evening for the purpose of granting the Overseers a Poor Rate for the ensuing half year.

                Also a Sanitary Rate to meet the demand of the Rural Sanitary Authority.

It was proposed by Mr Hewson and seconded by Mr Gilbert that a Poor Rate of 1s 2d in the £ be granted.                     Carried.

Proposed by Mr Gear and seconded by Mr Taylor that a sanitary Rate of 1/6 in the £ be granted.                      Carried.

Mr Hewson proposed and Mr G Nutt seconded that a Vestry meeting be held on Thursday November 7th to appoint a Guardian in the place of Mr Ord, deceased.

Parish of Somerton, November 7th 1889.

At a Vestry meeting for the Parish of Somerton held in the Vestry Room on Thursday the 7th day of November 1889 it was proposed by Mr John Head seconded by Mr John Crocker and unanimously resolved that the Guardians of the Langport Union be requested to inform the Local Government Board that it is desired that a new Guardian should be elected for the said parish in the place of the late Mr H W Ord, and to desire that an order for the election of such Guardian may be issued by that boar din due course.

                And further that this resolution be signed by the churchwardens and Overseers on behalf of the parish and forwarded to the Clerk to the Guardians.
