At a Vestry held this day in the Vestry room of this Parish pursuant to due notice of which the following is a copy:
Somerton, Somerset.
The Divided Parishes and Poor Law Amendment Act 1876.
Notice is hereby given that a Vestry meeting will be held at the Vestry room in this Parish on Thursday next the first day of January 1885 at 11 a.m. for the purpose of considering a letter received from the Local Government Board and making such orders thereon as the Vestry may think fit.
Also to grant a Rate for the support of the Somerton Infant School.

[a very indistinct hand for this and the next minutes] The order made by the Local Government Board relating to divided parishes of the date of Dec 30th was read, and it was resolved to make objection to the given orders with a view to obtain a clause in the Act of Parliament to provide that the lands taken away from this Parish should be as liable for the debt past [? paid] and [?????] for the drainage of the town which has been imposed on the whole parish by law under the Local Government Board.
Resolved that Mr Parsons and Mr Pinney be requested to undertake the necessary correspondence.
Proposed by Mr F W Pinney and seconded by Mr Parsons that a Rate of 2d in the £ be granted for the support of the Somerton Infants School, west Street, which was carried.

At a Vestry held this day in the Vestry Room of this Parish pursuant to due Notice of which the following is a copy:
Notice is hereby given that a Vestry will be held in the Vestry Room of this Parish on Thursday next the 26th instant at 11 o’clock in the forenoon for the purpose of appointing Overseers and Waywardens for the ensuing year.
Also to elect members of the Burial Board in place of the retiring members who are eligible for re-election.

Proposed by Mr Head and seconded by Mr George Cossins that Messrs ? Bond and A ? Hobbes and E Brown be added to the list of Overseers, which was carried.
Proposed by Mr W Hewson and seconded by Mr W Nutt that Mr John Wyatt stand as Waywarden.
Proposed by Mr W Nutt and seconded by Mr James Nutt that Mr John Crocker should also stand as Waywarden.
Proposed by Mr Ord and seconded by Mr G Cossins that Messrs Talbot and F S Crocker should continue in office. After a show of hands Messrs Wyatt and F Crocker were elected.
Mr ? Braine [?] and Mr G H Cossins were re-elected as members of the Burial Board. Proposed by Mr Hewson and seconded by Mr J Wyatt that Mr John Talbot be added to the list of members of the Burial Board in place of Mr R H Scriven which was carried.
Proposed by John Wyatt and seconded by Mr Hewson that the same Guardians continue in office.
Proposed by Mr Hewson and seconded by Mr John Peddle that our Guardians shall bring forward the motion of the Press being admitted in the Board room which was carried.
Resolved that a Vestry shall be called this day month for the purposes of the Sanitary Committee applying for tenders for doing the proposed works and to lay the said tenders before the Vestry.

At a Vestry held this day in the Vestry room of this Parish pursuant to due notice of which the following is a copy:
Notice is hereby given that a vestry will be held in the Vestry Room of this Parish on Friday next the 10th instant at 11 o’clock in the forenoon for the purpose of examining the Churchwardens and Charity accounts.
The Overseers and the Clerk to the Burial Board will also produce their accounts for examination.
Also to appoint Churchwardens for the ensuing year.

Proposed by Mr John Wyatt and seconded by Mr John Talbot that the churchwardens shall kindly undertake the drainage of the church in such manner as they think fit – carried.
The churchwardens’ accounts were produced, examined and found correct.
Proposed by Mr Hodges and seconded by Mr John Crocker that Mr W D Snook stand again as Parish churchwarden which was carried.
Mr W H Strong again selected Wm Jennings as his churchwarden.
The School accounts were audited and found correct. The Charity accounts were produced and fund correct.
The Burial Board accounts were produced, examined and found correct.
Parish of Somerton, April 23rd 1885.
At a Vestry held this day in the Vestry Room of this Parish pursuant to due notice of which the following is a copy:
Notice is hereby given that the adjourned Vestry will be held in the Vestry Room of this Parish on Thursday next the 23rd instant at 11 o’clock in the forenoon, for the Sanitary Committee to produce the tenders received by them for the carryout out of the works proposed at the Vestry held on 26th March last.

Proposed by Mr John Wyatt and seconded by Mr Wm Nutt that a drain for the purpose of carrying the effluent water from the outfall works be carried across Cary Mead and this Vestry recommends the tender sent in by Mr Bennett for £16.17.6 subject to alteration for introducing 6 in in place of 4 in pipe be accepted – the Somerton sanitary Committee undertaking at the same time that the treatment of the sewage under the sodium process shall be effectually carried out.
Proposed by Mr James Parsons and seconded by Mr W D Snook that this Vestry desires that the Langport Sanitary Authority authorise the Somerton Guardians and Mr F W Pinney to negotiate with Mr F Trippick for the execution of the proposed works in connection with the town drainage, subject to the inspection and direction of Mr Charles Bennett, District Surveyor. – carried.

After duly considering the letter received from the Local Government Board it was suggested that the Committee appointed should attend a meeting fixed to be held in the Board Room at the Union on the 16th October 1885, which they consented to do.

Notice is hereby given that a Vestry will be held in the Vestry room of this Parish on Thursday next the 5th November at 11 o’clock in the forenoon for the purpose of granting the Overseers a Poor and Sanitary Rate to meet the orders made on them for the present half year.

Proposed by Mr John Wyatt and seconded by Mr James Parsons that the assistant Overseer should wrote to the clerk of the Board of Guardians for an explanation respecting the Sanitary orders being higher than last half year.
Proposed by Mr Wm Peddle and seconded by Mr Wyatt that a Rate at 1/1 in the £ be granted. The Overseers to meet the orders made on them for the present half year.
Proposed by Mr James Parsons and seconded by Mr John Wyatt that this Vestry be adjourned until Thursday 12th instant to consider the Sanitary orders sent to the Overseers.

Notice is hereby given that a Vestry will be held in the Vestry room in Somerton, Somerset on Thursday the 12th day of November 1885 at 11 o’clock in the forenoon for the purpose of examining the accounts relating to the Infant School of the above Parish and for granting a Voluntary Rate for the continuance of the said school.

At a Vestry held this day in the Vestry Room of this parish pursuant to due notice of which the following is a copy:
Notice is hereby given that the adjourned Vestry will be held in the Vestry room of this Parish on Thursday next the 12th instant at 12 o’clock at noon for the purpose of deciding whether the money required for improvements to the sanitary Works shall be borrowed or paid by one Rate.

It having been suggested that Col Pinney might be willing to purchase from the Sanitary Authority the three pumps provided for the three wells on his property.
Resolved: that the Vestry be willing to adopt such a proposal and that it be left to Mr F W Pinney to carry out the negotiation.
Resolved: that the Sanitary Authority be asked to reduce the amount of the precepts upon the Parish of Somerton for special expenses from the £140 & £120.
It was also resolved that Mr Charles Bennett should be paid the sum of £3 for carrying out the alterations and improvements to the sanitary works.
