Parish of Somerton, January 5th 1882.
At a Vestry held this day in the Vestry Room pursuant to due notice of which the following is a copy:
Notice is hereby given that a Vestry will be held in the Vestry Room of this Parish on Thursday next January 5th at 11 o’clock in the forenoon for the purpose of granting the Overseers a grant to meet the demand made on them by the Sanitary Authority.
Also t appoint Inspectors under the Act of 3 & 4 Wm 4 Chap 90 and to decide the amount of money to be raised for the purposes of the said Act for the current year.

A Rate of 10d in the £ on house and orchard property and 2½d in the £ on land was granted to the Overseers to meet the demand made on them by the sanitary Authority.
Proposed by Mr H J Watts that a rate of 6d in the £ be granted to meet the purposes of the above Act. Also that the Inspectors of the previous year continue in office.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.

Parish of Somerton, 25th March 1882.
At a Vestry held this day in the Vestry Room pursuant to due notice of which the following is a copy:
Notice is hereby given that a Vestry will be held in the Vestry Room of this Parish on Saturday next the 25th inst at 11 o’clock in the forenoon for the purpose of appointing Guardians, Waywardens and Overseers for the year ensuing.

Messrs Geo H Cossins and H W Ord were nominated by Mr W D Snook as Guardians.
Proposed by F H Dickinson Esq and seconded by Mr W D Snook that the present Waywardens continue in office.
Proposed by Mr J I Hodges and seconded by Mr S Tatchell that Mr John Wyatt be appointed Waywarden for the ensuing year, which was put to the meeting with the following result. Mr John Talbot 15 votes, Mr F S Crocker 18 votes and Mr Wyatt 4 votes, after which Mr Talbot and Mr Crocker were considered duly appointed.
It was proposed to add to the list of Overseers Messrs J Wyatt, J I Hodges and Thompson.
Proposed as an amendment by Mr J I Hodges that the names of Messrs Cossins and Ord be added in place of Messrs Hodges and Wyatt which was put to the meeting with the following result – Mr Thompson 13 votes, Mr Wyatt 12 votes, Mr Hodges 11 votes and Mr Cossins 10 votes, after which the first three were added to the list.
The following persons were nominated to serve the office of Overseer, viz: Samuel David, Joseph Williams, William Snook junior, George Nutt, Robert House Scriven, John Crocker, Frederick Gare, Mr Thompson, John Wyatt, J I Hodges.
Proposed by F H Dickinson Esq and seconded by Mr B Clark that the collector of the Voluntary School Rate shall find a security for the amount of £50 which was carried.

Parish of Somerton, April 10th 1882.
At a Vestry held this day in the Vestry room pursuant to due notice of which the following is a copy:
Notice is hereby given that a Vestry will be held in the Vestry Room of this parish on Monday he 10th inst at 11 o’clock in the forenoon for the purposes of examining the churchwardens and charity accounts.
The Overseers and the clerk of the Burial Board will produce their accounts for examination.
Also to appoint churchwardens also to agree members of the Burial Board in place of the retiring members.

The accounts of the churchwardens and the Charity Trustees were produced, examined and found correct.
The Overseers accounts were produced, examined and passed. The clerk of the Burial Board produced hi sow accounts which were found correct and passed.
Proposed by James Parsons Esq and seconded by Mr E W Valentine that the present church wardens remain in office; also that the following persons are elected members to form the Burial Board, viz:

At a Vestry held this day in the Vestry room of this Parish pursuant to due notice of which the following is a copy:-
Notice is hereby given that a Vestry will be held in the Vestry room of this parish on Thursday next the 4th May at 11 o’clock in the forenoon for the purpose of granting the Overseers Rates to meet current expences of the next half year.
Also to appoint nine members to form a Burial Board for the Parish of Somerton there being at present no legally constituted Board.

Proposed by Mr James parsons and seconded by Mr W D Snook that a rate of 1/5 in the £ be granted the Overseers to meet the expences of the Highway and Union for the half year.
Proposed by Mr W D Snook and seconded by Mr James Parsons that a rate of 1/- on house and orchard property and 3d on land be granted the overseers to meet the Sanitary Orders, which was carried unanimously.
Proposed by Mr James parsons and seconded by Mr H W Ord that the following gentlemen be appointed to form the Burial Board for the Parish of Somerton, viz:
Rev W H Strong, Col Pinney, W D Snook, Wm Jennings, John Talbot, F S Crocker, Rev Beavis, Robert House Scriven, George H Cossins.
Which was, after a short discussion, put to the meeting and carried.

Parish of Somerton, 30th September 1882.
At a Vestry held this day in the Vestry room pursuant to due notice of which the following is a copy:
Notice is hereby given that a Vestry meeting will be held in the Old Vestry room on Saturday 30th September 1882 at 11 o’clock for the purpose of sanctioning a voluntary Rate at 2d in the £, divided equally between the landlord and tenant, for the support of the National Infant School, West Street, Somerton, and also for the further consideration of the question of water supply for the said town.

Proposed by Mr F W Pinney and seconded by Mr W D Snook that this Vestry desires to be informed by the Langport Sanitary Authority what legal area chargeable for the Rate for the supply of water for the town of Somerton may be, and that another meeting be called when such information has been obtained.

Parish of Somerton, October 13th 1882.
At a Vestry held this day in the Town Hall pursuant to due notice of which the following is a copy:
Notice is hereby given that on Friday next, October 13th at 11 o’clock in the forenoon, a Vestry will be held in the Town Hall to consider the expediency of requesting the Board of Guardians to resolve – under 38 & 39 Victoria Chaps 55 and 277 – to constitute a special drainage district for the town of Somerton for the purpose of charging thereon exclusively the expences of works of sewerage, water supply or other works which by the said Act are, or by order of the Local Government Board may be declared to be special expences.
And to appoint a committee to set out the area of the said district and communicate with the Board of Guardians and the Local Government Board.

Proposed by F W Pinney Esq and seconded by W D Snook that F H Dickinson take the chair, which was carried unanimously.
Proposed by Mr W D Snook and seconded by Mr George Hodin Cossins that a district be formed to extend 150 feet on each side of the drains in the following streets, namely – West Street from the flushing well at Pond Pool, Broad Street, North Street s far as Mr Parson’s gate and New Street to the beginning of Long Acre Lane and Kirkham Street to the well including all the houses in the Market Square and Cow Square, and that a committee be appointed to set out the area of the said district and to communicate with the Board of Guardians and the Local Government Board.
Proposed by Mr W Hewson and seconded by Mr John Crocker that the whole area of the parish be rated –
Whereon a show of hands was taken with the following result:
For the amendment – 55
For the original motion – 33.
A poll was taken with 101 votes for the original motion and 15 votes against it, and the poll was adjourned until 11 o’clock tomorrow Saturday to open at 11 and close at 3 o’clock.
It was agreed that the committee should be the Sanitary Committee.

At an adjourned Vestry held this day the 14th October 1882 a further poll was taken lasting from 11 o’clock a.m. until 3 o’clock p.m. and the result of the whole poll is the following:
That 66 voters polled in favour of the District, giving 151 votes
And that 66 voted against it, giving 73 votes.

Parish of Somerton, November 2nd 1882.
At a Vestry held this day in the Vestry Room of this Parish pursuant of due notice of which the following is a copy:
Notice is hereby given that a Vestry will be held in the Vestry room of this Parish on Thursday next the 2nd day of November 1882 at 11 o’clock in the forenoon for the purpose of granting a Poor and Sanitary Rate to the Overseers to meet the current expences of the next half year.
Also to consider the necessity of granting a Gas Rate to meet a bill rendered by Messrs Thomas & Co for the supply of gas for the Public Lamps.

Proposed by Mr W H Ord and seconded by Mr John Peddle that a Rate of 1s 2d in the £ be granted to the Overseers to meet the Union orders, which was carried.
Proposed by Mr J I Hodges and seconded by Mr H W Ord that a Rate at 1/2 on House and Orchard property and 3½d on lad in the £ be granted to meet the Sanitary Orders which was carried unanimously.
Proposed by Mr F S Crocker and seconded by Mr H J Watts that a Rate of 6d in the £ be granted to meet Messrs Thomas & Co’s account rendered which was unanimously carried.
Proposed by Mr W Hewson and seconded by Mr John Peddle that Mr Hodges produces a statement of the working expences of the Sanitary Authority – thereupon Mr J I Hodges promised to produce a statement of the working expences for half a year.
